compatibility with older applications

have tried to install an older spreadsheet program ( Quattropro 8)on a new
Win xp system. It install OK but locks when I try to open a sheet file.
Tried all of the compatibility choices listed under properties (run as
win95, etc) no luck. Is there any other way to make it run??
