My husband's computer at work has Windows 98. Our home computer has Windows XP, and the dinosaur in the basement has Windows 95. He'll be working on a Microsoft Word document at work, save it to a floppy, and then bring it home, and the computer says that "the disk in drive A is not formatted-would you like to format it now?" Of course, doing that will delete all the files. He's pretty frustrated. This is the first place I stumbled upon for help. Anybody?? Thanks!

Did you try that disk in both computers at home? Windows 95 and 98 are more closely related to each other than 98 and XP. Also, as far as Word goes, Word documents are backwards compatible. Meaning a Word document created on a version of Word that came out in 98 would be compatible with any version of Word that came out before it. BUT may not be compatible with a newer version of Word. So if a document was created using a version of Word that came out in 98 it may not (and I don't think it is) be compatible with a version of Word that came out after 98.

Your problem is floppy drive compatibility. Due to variations such as
alignment, a floppy recorded on one drive may not be compatible with
another.

If both the office and home Windows XP computers have USB ports, you may
want to consider one of the small and inexpensive USB flash drives. If you
do, be sure to copy the file to your hard drive before opening with Word.
When done, save to the hard drive and use Windows Explorer to copy to the
external drive.
