Has anyone done a side-by-side 'real world' comparison of
the effectiveness of the Microsoft AntiSpyware product
against Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, Webroot's SpySweeper, and/or
Spybot Search & Destroy?

Yes I did.
The Microsoft beta-version should be called an alpha-
version.

What constitutes an alpha versus a beta version?

I have the Longhorn alpha and it is a LOT WORSE than this beta.

See here:

http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm

Click on any of the test results links and scroll down to see the totals.
The results for Giant are in the odd-numbered test results pages (there were
so many columns, the author split the results to two pages per test). Keep
in mind, these tests were conducted when MSAS was still Giant Antispyware.

I did a side-by-side of Spybot and MAS. I was suprised
to find that when I ran Spybot and didn't remove anything
and then ran MAS right afterwards, the MAS found 7 versus
the 4 Spybot found. I only have done 1 test though, so
it is like it is an exact science.

MS AS is defineately not an Alpha product. I have tested Alpha product
before. It is like it says Beta 1. MS usually starts with beta1, then 2,
then 3 and then several release candidates.

MSAS (free-beta) & SpySweeper (30 day trial) are very effective and each
finds slightly different things and both are needed to clean badly infected
systems, as well as a good antivirus program.

Adaware (free) and SpyBot 1.3 (free) are basically useless if the first two
are being used.

I have also recently tried Yahoo AntiSpy, Spy Subtract, ZoneLab's Online
Scan, Bazooka, and HijackThis to see if I missed anything after cleaning
with MSAS and Spy Sweeper.

None of those added anything to the MSAS and SpySweeper combo. Granted you
have to be very careful with these two as false positives can reek havoc on
your machine's health although I had very little problems with FP. Google,
or MSN ), is your friend.

Removing spyware can leave your newly cleaned system unable to communicate
with the internet due to corrupted winsock2 and I have used LSPFIX in the
past successfully to solve that problem.

I clean systems for people all the time. Ad Aware, SpyBot, Spyware Blaster,
and SpywareGuard were all I needed to get the jobs done.

Until now.

I will continue to use MSAS and Spy Sweeper in conjunction with a free
antivirus, Avast, a free personal firewall, Zone Alarm, and JavaCool's
products SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard.

I wouldn't 'compare'.
I run 'em all: Spybot, Spywareblaster, Ad-Aware, MS AS
and Webroot [loaded, not installed yet].
They all find, and do, different things.
I would be really thankful if anyone will point me to any
more GOOD FREEWARE out there!

Thanks,
SpmANoNo.

I run most of what you do, along with the following:

BHO Demon http://www.definitivesolutions.com

MVPS hosts file http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm, with eDexter
and Hostess to keep things zipping along.

If you're running broadband, I'd most certainly get a hardware router
(sorry - not free...). It'll stop things crackerz haven't thought up yet...
