I have a Compaq Presario 5456 which as a 300 MHz Celeron CPU, 20gb H/D
and 128mb ram. This pc as been given to me as the old OS which was
Windows 98SE as been delete and can not be reinstalled because the
Compaq restore CD ask for a serial number which I do not have and
Compaq/HP tech was a waste of time. So my question is would Windows
2000 Pro run on this system. Any help would be great.

While, yes, W2K would run on that machine, it may not be the fastest thing
around. The weakest computer that I've ever run W2K on was an AMD 350 with
256 MB. It was not very pleasurable, IMO. Something in the 300 range is
better suited for NT 4, again, IMO. I do have an old test computer at work
with a 550 with W2K and 384 MB and that isn't bad.

Use 98se
Do a Google Search for Belarc
He has a Free Download on his site that shows all of the hardware and software on your computer (plus it had the CD key number coincidentally)
Be sure and get yourself and AVP. firewall, AdAware, and SpyBot S&D. And learn how to use them. They are not Automatic.

Have you tried using the PC Serial Number stamped in the back of the PC?
