Hi,

I have an old system a Compaq DeskPRO 4600. It currently has a 6 GB
hard disk drive. I wanted to add a new one, so since drives are so
cheap I went for a Maxtor 120GB. However, when I added the new driver
the system resets itself.

I had to add a new IDE cable with 2 connectors (the original only had
1). The original 6GB disk was set to master and the new 120GB set as
slave (No other combination of MA, SL, CS worked). The system booted
up to the Windows 2000 login screen. I did not even log in because I
heard a lot of activity on the (original?) drive. After about 1 minute
of disk activity, the machine reset itself and booted again. This
sequence continued for the 3 attempts I made.

Can anyone make any suggestions on this? Can I do anything in the
Windows 2000 startup menu options to help find the problem? I couldn't
see anything in BIOS that I could configure. Or is it possible my
system can't cope with such a large disk.

Thanks,
BM

Have you tried the new drive on its own? BIOS should be set to AUTO.
Check Compaq website for BIOS upgrades, they call them Softpaqs. You may
have to use overlay program from drive manufacturer to enable use of this
drive.

Mike.

Mike,

Can you let me know what an overlay program is and where I might find one?

Thanks,
BM
