Upon compacting per Microsoft's instructions, ie. Don't use computer, don't
touch mouse, don't even breathe during the compacting process, I find that
most of my mail has been lost and is missing from the various folders I
created. Furthermore, all my mail folders are now under the Local folder
instead of being subfolders of my inbox. What caused this?

You're not talking about Outlook here but Outlook Express, right?

Note that this is an Microsoft Office Outlook forum.

Outlook Express is family of Internet Explorer and Outlook of the Office
family.
