I used Registry Healer and on completion I was asked if I wanted to
Compact the Registry. I declined because I have extensive spare space
on my hard drive and mainly because I did not understand the merits of
such an action.

but I am not yet convinced that it is a safe and worthwhile procedure.

Windows version?

In general, none of these Registry tools is safe unless you are very sure of
what you're doing and what you are letting the tool do. They do not provide
any significant performance gain, and certainly not enough to warrant the
risks involved.
