I frequently get the message "to free up disk space, outlook express can
compact messages...". I usually proceed with this, but have experienced over
100 of my emails deleted on more than one occasion. Cox, my internet
provider, claims this is an OE issue and can't help me. I read a post that
any deleted items should be in recycle bin, if all updates are current, which
they are. But, none of my emails are there. Can I do something so that this
message does not come up? Thanks!

This newsgroup is for support of Outlook
97/98/2000/2002/2003/2007 from the Office suite of products. Outlook
Express is actually a separate program despite the similar name.

For help with your OE questions, try an OE newsgroup such as
microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general (for OE 6), or
an OE help website such as http://insideOE.tomsterdam.com. If you're

Download Thunderbird from www.mozilla.com/thunderbird and have it import
your email accounts, messages and address book from Outlook Express.
Outlook Express isn't supported anymore. Thunderbird has a real time
spell check, is very easy to back up and compacts automatically. Oh, and
it's free and quite similar to Outlook Express in its interface.

Does it have the same compacting messages trip? What needs to be done to
back it up?

Probably, but I haven't seen it yet.

I believe the same method used to back up OE will back up WLM.

Which makes Thunderbird superior. With Thunderbird, you only need to
back up three files and to restore, you paste them into T-Bird's folder
after removing the default files.

If you only have three mail folders......if you have created mail folders
then you need to copy all those as well......
TBird is like OE - it uses one MBOX format file for each mail folder....

I meant everything in the Thunderbird folder, usually three things and
two in Linux. This will back up everything except the passwords.
Accounts, address book, created folders, newsgroups, the works. You
can't do that with Windows Mail.
