Here is the problem:

When I close the Windows Mail program, it prompts me with:
"Windows Mail can compact the message store. This may take up to a few
minutes. OK or Cancel"
When I click OK, then:
"Compacting the Windows Mail database" message appears, but a few seconds
later when the progress bar is about 50% done, the following message
appears:
"Windows Mail has stopped working."
And then:
"Check online for a solution and restart the program" or "Restart the
program."
Clicking on Problem Details reveals the following explanations:
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BEX
Application Name: WinMail.exe
Application Version: 6.0.6000.16386
Application Timestamp: 4549b0f9
Fault Module Name: StackHash_ea8f
Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0
Fault Module Timestamp: 00000000
Exception Offset: 00000001
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Data: 00000008
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Information 1: ea8f
Additional Information 2: 0cc38d82a5cbf36977b21a87669d36c4
Additional Information 3: 1960
Additional Information 4: 0664d6129a7b254fb7d4319f387ac813

And then a popup appears with the following message:
"Windows Mail was closed. To help protect your computer, Data Execution
Prevention has closed Windows Mail. Click to learn more."
When I click Cancel to the very first prompt, Windows Mail shuts down with
no problems.

I allowed windows to compact the messages. So where are they now? It
appears that compacting messages is just simply deleting my inbox. I did see
some files in the recycle bin, restored, and still can't get back the
messages I had prior to compacting. HELP

The messages do not get compacted. Only the database is compacted, so the
eml files (messages) are unchanged and are in the same place they were
before.

Then let it compact, and it won't bother you again for quite a while.
You can set the compacting frequency here: Tools, Options, Advanced,
Maintenance.

It doesn't compact your messages. It compacts the message store (index)
that keeps track of the messages. Failure to do so will result in slower
performance eventually.
