I clicked on the pop-up allowing my e-mail messages to be compacted to
conserve space several times over several weeks before I realized a lot of my
saved messages were missing. I did find them and they had been archived with
a .dbx extension on the files and I have tried just about everything to
retrieve them without success. What gives? I did not give IE permission to
archive them, let alone put them where they are inaccessible.
Please help me!

First of all, some misconceptions. The dbx files are NOT archive files, that
is the normal format for the storage of OE data. Secondly, they are only
accessible in OE, apart from a couple of specialised applications such as
DBExtract. "IE" did not archive them, as they aren't archived!

Now to the specifics - did you interrupt the compaction process before it
finished? If you have installed all the latest patches for OE, you should
find copies of the dbx files in your Recycle bin.

I do not think I interrupted the compaction process.

I think my OE has all the updates as I am on automatic update for them.

The Recycle Bin that you refer to is the one on my desktop is it not? I keep
it emptied, but do not remember seeing any of my e-mails there.

You wouldn't have seen individual emails in the recycle bin, you would have
seen dbx files.
Try creating a new OE Identity and importing the email from the old. see if
that helps to show the missing mail.

To add OE is part of IE and as such its supported under IE newsgroups, it is
a completely different app to Outlook
