You cannot do Smart Device Development with VS2002

There is no SDK for CF 1.0
You need VS.NET 2003 Pro or above

For CF 2.0 there is an SDK and you can also use VS2005 Standard and above.

Cheers

Since it's still a beta there is no separate download. You have to get a
copy of Visual Studio 2005 beta, it's part of that install.

Hmm But how can I get then the System.Data.SqlServerCE class without
the visual Studio ?

I mean the consequence is that i can only write applications with SQL
CE when I have the visual studio isn't it ?

With managed code the answer is yes, you must use Studio for development.
When CF 2.0 is released, there will be a separate SDK download.

Thats bad.
We plan to use Visual Studio, but it would not be a good thing to buy
an old version when a new is going to be released.

When will CF 2.0 be released?

There's no official date yet, but since it's named Studio 2005, I think that
at least brackets the timeframe to no more than 7 months out.

Before the end of the year. If your product will not be released before
that, you could get VS2005 Standard Beta 2 and start developing:
http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/vs2005/get/

There is also a Go-Live license:
http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/vs2005/golive/
