Multiple potential causes:
Overheating resulting from ventalation fan failure
Overheating from dust or other ventalation obstruction
Overheating from inadequate contact betwen component and heat sink
Intermitent component malfuntion (CPU, GPU, motherboard chipset or memory)
Contaminated or corroded electrical contact.
If you are able to open your computer without violating a warranty or
maintenence agreement you could check to make sure the power supply, CPU
and any other fans operate. You probably shouldn't open the case of a
notebook/laptop except in connection with removeable drive or battery
access. Note that the components inside a computer are very sensitive to
even mild static electric discharges.
Many computer and motherboard manufacturers also have tempreture
monitoring utilities on their web sites. There are also third party
tempreture monitor programs like Everest Home Edition (has other
features) at
