Tenho o Windows Vista e estou com dificuldades em retirar a linha de
separador em nota de rodapé, que surge, por defeito, quando é criada.

In order to modify or delete the Footnote Separator, you must be in Normal
or Draft view. In Word 2003 or earlier, use View | Footnotes. In Word 2007,
use References | Footnotes | Show Notes.

In the Footnote pane, click the arrow beside the dropdown list box on the
toolbar and choose Footnote Separator. Modify it as desired or delete it; if
you delete it, you may want to change the font size or paragraph line
spacing to reduce as much as possible the space it takes up.
