I found a handy way to operate much safer with the "outside world."
I have used it using a dialup provider and am very pleased.

The Alternate Solution: knowing that you would just nod your head and
yet ignore it if we recommend that non-admin account, we turned a
hidden feature of Windows around. Windows allows you to run single
applications under a different user account. Usually, we would
recommend to use that to run admin applications from a restricted user
account, but since we mentioned we've 'given up' asking you to change
to that, we've decided to help you using the most endangered types of
applications (browsers, email apps, IM apps, multimedia apps) through
a restricted user accout instead.

Download it from here.

Some tips and opinions:

1. Make a restore point FIRST !!!

2. The un-install option is in the program itself. You will NOT find
it in the Add/Remove Programs.

3. After you have used it, you may decide you want to delete the
limited user accounts if you are the only computer user.

4. Read the forums for Alter Ego as the program itself lacks a help
file.

XP doesn't delete the directories of accts. you have deleted, you can
leave them or delete them
manually to unclutter things and save some disk space.

Good luck,
Andy
