Comm port problems

Had my computer crash a couple of days ago as a result of a "Missing or
corrupt" Hal.dll file. Had to reinstall the system through a backup I
had. No problems in that respect as it appears everything is working;
"except"; I'm having problems with my comm ports. I have a newer Compaq
Presario with 6 USB ports. When I use Device manager to look at what
ports I have; it only shows my printer port; if I plug into one of the
USB ports; that one will show up as a " Prolific USB to serial comm
port" with the comm port number listed. Device manager also will state
that this port is working properly. When I try to use the port I get a
error stating that the port is not available.

Any suggestions/solutions ?

Thanks for your reply. I will look and see what I can come up with. No
real problem/hurry as I have two other computers in the household that I
can rely on!
