How come every time i try to use my usb v1 device in my new 865PE Neo-LS
motherboard bios v1.9 it locks up my whole pc instantly? the device is a
barcode scanner by metrologic model: ms9540 POS. the physically same scanner
works fine on another machine that runs the same operating system, windows
xp.

CDRW drive with Adaptec/Roxio software? I've seen this due to it
overwriting some .dll needed for USB; it's documented, and there's a
wad of fixes to download from adaptec/roxio's site.

Ouch! Does your PC have USB sockets front and back? If the back ones
are OK, then the front ones may not be connected to the motherboard
correctly - some cases have loose wires to connect individually (to
cater for possible different pin layouts) and if these are connected
in the wrong order, you may have problems.

Do you get the same mileage with other USB devices?

i didn't connect the front usb ports. i have tried all the ones in the back
tho. same problem. the device gets recognized by plug and play and lets me
choose my driver but as soon as i try to use my device it freezes my pc
instantly. the device works just fine on a dell compuer running windows xp
sp1.

Hm, OK; it's not port wiring or a bad device, then. Could be bad USB
host hardware or drivers, though I've not seen that in XP, or a subtle
USB power issue... some USB devices require external power or boast
they don't need it while providing for provision of this. The latter
should be tested with the extra power; it may be required after all!

Let's get more hware detail at this point... is that Intel 865xx
chipset, or 875? Both have native USB 2.0 hardware, but may need
additional drivers to make it "go" (plus XP SP1, else no USB 2.0).

What USB device are you testing with? Some devices may have other
problem scopes unrelated to the USB factor, e.g. drive letter
contention or squabbles with integrated add-on code that attempts to
work with the drive as a "standard" drive, etc.

BIOS can take an interest in "legacy" or boot-time USB devices, such
as USB drives, esp. when these contain bootable material.

The first thing that must be installed on the newer Intel Chipsets is
the
infinst_ utility. The 865PE chipset is newer than WINXP. Intel
suggests
installing the infinst utility, then the latest directX, then the
drivers.
Before any install one must first configure the BIOS with a new MB.
