Hello NG,

I'm using Windows Mail of Win Vista Business SP1
as my default mail-Client and Newsreader

but I have some trouble if my Windows Mail try to
compact the message store.

When the counter under:

Tools->Options->Advanced->Maintenance->
Compact the database on shutdown every [50] runs

is reached and if I say yes to the question
if WinMail should compact the message store,
it always crashes and after a restart it asks
again to compact, but the counter is set to 50

Something goes wrong and I don't want to use
"Clean up now" because I don't want to loose
all my posts, etc.

What can I do to successful compact my MailStore?
The store is about ~2GB

Thomas

The only thing that gets compacted is the database, not the message store
itself. You can manually compact using my WMUtil utility
(www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/) but that won't change the setting in the registry
for the compact check count value that WinMail uses to prompt you. (see
www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx)

To get Winmail to compact try shutting down all other programs and then see
if it will then work. 3rd party program interference is a major problem
with WinMail (see point 3 here: www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3)

Try running the various repair functions in the WMUtil program:
http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil

If no improvement, upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

http://download.live.com/wlmail

Hello Gary,

Yes, I tried this. But the problem still exist. :-(
btw: Would be good if the code of wmutil is available.
Who is the author? Does anybody know him?

Thank you, but live mail is definitely not an upgrade for me...
It feels more like a step back...
I like it more if the mail programm can be used offline and
don't trust the mechanism, if there will be placed a local
message store, which has to syncronized with the web if i'm
going online.
Very unusful for my Notebook and for my Wkst too.
And there is more user-control (my) about online activities of
the mail program if it is started rom the local computer.

See the post in this thread by Steve Cochran, where he says,
"You can manually compact using my WMUtil utility..."

You seem to have an incorrect concept of what WLM is.
It's basically a desktop email program like WM, with a few extras
thrown in. You can configure WLM to be as web-unaware as
you want, with nothing stored on the web.

Yes, perhaps my first "bad" impress, when wlmail starts
is obsolete and perhaps I should start an another try.
Will see. But thank you for your tips.

To disable the initial "Signing in" function in WLM, go to its
Tools, Options, Connection, "Stop signing in".

The primary drawback is that you won't have a fully-synced
backup copy of your contacts on the web. If you have
additional WLM questions, it's best to ask them in the
WLM newsgroup:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...e.mail.desktop

or via your news reader: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...e.mail.desktop
