COM1 Unavailable

My default network connection uses a dialup adapter
configured to use COM1 for internet access etc. However,
other applications (eg Hyperterminal) can not use COM1
(message of Port is being used by Telephony Device) even
when the dialup is out of use. Does Xp grab the default
network connection at start-up even before it is needed?
Can this be disabled? I have the same configuration on a
WIN98 laptop which works fine.
