Has there been a change to [Windows 2000 Service Pack 4] or a [Windows
Update] that causes programs that were functioning with com1 to stop
functioning?

I am trying to communicate to a UPS with com1 via a serial cable, but I
can't get through.
I stop/start the UPS and a question mark appears on the screen of
hyper-terminal.
I set the port parameters per APC recommendations, but the software cannot
find the UPS.
I have been several days with APC Technical Support emailing back and forth,
but no success yet.

Is there an Windows Application that can test com1's functionality?

Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks, Tracey
BTW I tested the cable/UPS with a laptop running Windows 98 and all is fine.

Any exclamation marks showing in Device Manager?
Try removing com ports and rebooting

You can check your hardware port(s) by;

Short pins 2-3 on the com port to be tested
Select Start|Programs|Accessories|Communications|HyperTerminal. Give the
connection some name.
In the next Pop-Up menu, choose direct to COMx where x is the number of the
COM Port you are testing. Set the flow control setting to None.
You may leave the other settings in the next dialog box, though you can
increase the speed if you like.
Select File|Properties from the menu bar, select the "Settings" tab, and
then the "ASCII Setup" button. Check the option for Echo typed characters
locally.
Start typing. If you see double characters (that is, you see two characters
for every one you type), the serial port is setup correct and is functional.
