I have a piece of commercial software that communicates
with a laboratory instrument via COM1. When I, as a
domain admin log onto the pc, the software runs fine.
However, when a lab technician logs on to the same pc (no
admin privs), the application will not launch. When I
make the lab tech a member of the administrators group on
the pc, the app runs fine again. I am fairly certain that
this is due to a restriction on the serial ports.

Does anyone have a registry hack that will allow an
ordinary user to access these serial ports?

Thanks.

Most probably it fails on registry access to restricted areas,
something like searching for existing COM ports in HKLM\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION.
To test that COM port itself is not restricted, run Hyperterminal.
