My USB to Serial Converter reports that COM3, COM5, COM6 and COM7 are in use.

I can account for one com port for my laptop's in built modem, but how do I
discover what is using the other com ports?

This usually is caused by plugging the adapter into different ports, and
getting a new "number" assigned. You can "unplug" it, delete all the
coms in Device Manager and let it start over if you want.
