I cannot receive data from my GPS using Hyperterminal yet
it works on all other machines I've tried. The machine is
a Compaq E500 notebook and I had the same problem in
Win98 and now XP, I can get keystroke mirroring by
looping data in/data out cableing to the serial port,
suggesting that the port is open. any suggestions?

What he is trying to get you to check is that the COM port is actually turned on
and assigned a standard value (i.e. COM1/2/3/4 I/O 3f8/3e8/2f8/2e8).

If you can see that IRQ4 is showing up under the COM ports, then it is turned on
to some sort of hardware. My laptop can have the COM port switch from the 9-pin
RS-232 port over to the IR port. That is the other thing you might double check
in BIOS.
