Columns - paragraph spacing

I am typing an alphabetical list in 2 columns but Word appears to be
balancing/justifying the columns vertically by putting extra space between
the para's which looks strange & I can't control (the text is not centred
vertically)?

On the Layout tab of Page Setup, make sure that the vertical alignment is
set to Top and not Justified.
