columns and hyphenation of words

when I use columns of different sizes on different pages (a small outer
column to the left on even pages and to the right on odd pages with a section
break between pages), then Word 2002 seems to be unable to manage
user-controlled hyphenation, suggesting hyphenation of words in the middle of
a line on some of the pages. Thus line lengths have to be controlled by
inserting hyphens by hand - which subsequently annoys the spelling check. Is
there another way?

Perhaps you have Show Non-Printing Characters turned on, and you're
seeing all the markers in the middles of lines? They won't print (and
they won't show if you turn off the above).

When you hyphenate by hand, use an optional hyphen (Ctrl+Hyphen) and the
spelling checker won't complain.
