Column selections for Inbox and Sent mail box are not being saved

I want all views of my inbox (unread, all, last 7 days, etc.) to have column
for from and received; I want all views of my sent mail to have columns for
to and sent. However, once is change this to the correct setting (through
the customize current view box) for whichever view I'm in, it changes the
other views that I want other settings in. How do I keep this from
happening, and lock in my changes? It seems to me obvious that the default
for inbox should be from and received, and sent mail should be to and sent,
but this is obviously not the case.
