I need column heads to be lettered but both column and rows are numbered ..

Which version of Excel are you using?

In 2007 go to the office button and down to Excel Options, in the formula
tab unselect the checkbox labeled R1C1 reference style.

I am sure the same checkbox exists in earlier versions under Tools, Options
in the menu bar.
