Does anybody know of a source for cheap/free color separation software for
the Macintosh? I'd like to experiment a bit with separate inkjet prints
of the C,M,Y,K colors.

It isn't free, but Photoshop Elements plus Hidden Power Tools can do
that. Probably you won't have to print the results if you just want to
see what they look like.
