I have the same issue.
I am trying to use PowerPoint 2007 with the corporate PowerPoint 2003
template.
I had to create a theme for it. But even then, the new palette recolored
the original PPT.
Pretty messy.
I am not sure there is an easy solution for backwards compatibility.
