Color fade on logoff/shut down -- any way to control it?

The "fade" effect that happens when you go to shut down or log off --
can it be controlled? I'd actually like to manipulate the time the
effect takes. I don't know if this is even possible, but I can't seem
to dig up any info on the web, and thought I'd ask.

You can only turn it on or off.
