Hi all,

what's the difference of the ink within BCI-3, BCI-3e, BCI-6 or CLI-8?

CLI is the chromalife 100 ink with improved stability. The colors are
the same as the almost identical BCI-6. Exception: Magenta is
significantly different.

BCI-5 was replaced by BCI-6 and new ink
BCI-3 was replaced by BCI-3e and better ink quality (two different
swamps now)
BCI-8 should be the same ink as BCI-6 - used in BJC-8500 only

I assume that BCI-3e, BCI-6 and BCI-8 use the same color, while CLI-8 is

My understanding:
BCI3, BCI3e, and BCI6 use the same base formulation, but slightly
different coloring. My OCP table shows 3 and 3e the same, 6 different.
Many resellers sell one ink for BCI6 and BCI3.

BCI21=BCI3 ink, BCI24=BCI6 ink
(OCP shows different)

CLI8 is the same as BCI6, but with chrome particles added. Color may be
different. The black is supposedly deeper.
BCI7 is the same as CLI8, but only for the Japanese market.
The CLI/PGI HOC carts use the same ink as their replaceable tank
counterparts.

BCI8, its a wierd one. All I can find is that only the BJC 8500 uses it,
and it works alongside a BCI8WF cartridge to give it near photo quality
on plain paper. I suspect it might use the same ink as BCI3, if not a
special formulation. That printer is of a 1999 vintage.

Thanks - I expected that BCI-6 = BCI-3e and BCI-5 = BCI-3.

Yes, it was a very special product.

Yes, a funny system: two cartridge slots, one for C+M+Y, the other one
either for BCI-8Bk + Ink Optimizer BCI-8WF, or better Photo Colours with
BCI-8PM, -8PC and -8PBk. Even the original volume is strange - I guess,
the original color was 28 ml, 3rd party up to 30 ml, while some sources
name 36 ml instead. The higher volume BCI-8Bk was 60-68/72 ml (WF as Bk)

I was told by now that BCI-3, BCI-3e, BCI-5 and BCI-6 share the same
cartridge!?

BCI-3 -> BCI-3e has a slightly different color than
BCI-5 -> BCI-6

The formula of BCI-6 should be suitable for BCI-3 printers, but BCI-3
ink might block the print head faster in BCI-6 printers.

According to Canon, www.inksupply.com, and my local dealer, the carts
were changed but the ink was not.

The carts will work in any printer that uses that style up to and
including the ip 4000 and the i950/i960 type all the way back to the old
S800.

Not here in NZ. In fact BCI3 and BCI5 printers are so old most Canon
critics would be surprised to find them in use still.

Don't know why I'm bothering but even the Canon Europe PDF
"Compatibility Chart for Canon Inkjet Cartridges for Europe" no longer
even lists BCI3 or BCI5 only 3e and 6
