I have Windows XP Home edition sp2 installed along with all the security
updates provided by Windows Update.

My installation is a clean install (formated drive) onto a system that
previously ran ME.

I am having a strange cold boot issue. My computer will not boot from cold
unless it has been disconnected from the mains supply for a few seconds
(restarting is fine). If this hasn't happen the machine won't post and the
gfx card does not initialise (cutting the power at this point and
re-supplying it causes everything to boot normally).

This isn't a psu issue (I have a 550W unit), the boot from the XP CD and
install process went perfectly and restarting doesn't cause a problem, the
system behaved normally under ME. It only happens when the system is
shutdown. The shutdown process appears to work correctly, I hear the drive
heads parking and power is then cut.

I have no warnings in device manager and all my devices has driver correctly
installed, I'm running the latest motherboard bios and chipset drivers (SIS).
I have ACPI enabled in the bios.

I'm guessing at some sort of ACPI issue where the system doesn't shutdown
correctly but I have no idea how to go about fixing it. Any help would be
appreciated.

The problem occurs during a "cold-boot" so this does not appear to be an XP
problem It is a piece of hardware that is not working correctly. You say
the PSU is ok (550W) but how old is it? Do you change the unit yourself?
Check inside to see if all the internal power connections oare completely
connected to the motherboard.

Hi,

I believe it to be an XP shutdown issue as the hardware worked without
problem under ME, also I could cold boot from an ME shutdown, boot to the XP
CD, format the drive and install XP and restart the machine as required
without issue. The problem only manifested after cold booting from an XP
shutdown.

The PSU is relatively new and gives 4.95v on the 5v rail under normal use
and can drop to 4.87V under severe load. I consider it more than adaquete for
the system.

I have come across an article on the net regarding boot failures with
Windows XP sp2 and 'Prescott' CPUs -
http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-6268_11-5330486.html but nothing relating to
my setup - a SIS chipset based ECS K7S5A motherboard with an Athlon
Thunderbird 1333cpu.

Once power to the motherboard (after shutdown) has been cut for a few
seconds and re-applied the system will boot from cold without problem.
