Hi,
I am trying to find a problem with MS Word 2003. I am using Word 2003 in
conjunction with EndNote (v.6). For some reason Word 2003 show the codes
associated with the EndNote citations in replace of the citation (which
should read (Author, Year). I've been using Word with Endnote in this
configuration for years, but this problem just developed today. How do I get
this back to normal. Please note that I've tried playing with the "Reveal
Formatting" button under the Format menu and that does not help. This
actually happened once before about 2 months ago and I pushed some button
somewhere and made it better, but I can't remember which button I pushed
where. Thanks so much,
Alex Kolker, (E-Mail Removed)

You're probably seeing field codes. The keyboard shortcut Alt+F9 is a toggle
between the field codes and the field results (or you can change the "Field
codes" check box in Tools > Options > View, which does the same thing).

Hi,
Next question: Why does MS Word keep doing this when I open it. Now here
the other question: I only does this some times. I went for a few days with
no problems and now it's back again. Why are your products such a pain in
the neck?

Well, for a start, no one here works for Microsoft, so they're not "our"
products. And Normal.dot does ordinarily retain your settings when you quit
and restart Word. If you find that this doesn't happen for you, it's often
the result of an add-in. In your case, if you have an EndNote add-in, I
would look to that as the likely culprit.

That said, however, it's very easy to overlook the fact that field codes are
displayed if you're working in a document that doesn't contain any field
codes, so it could be that you are closing Word with the codes displayed.

First, they aren't "my" products -- the MVPs are not Microsoft employees
(http://word.mvps.org/AboutMVPs/index.htm). Sometimes we get just as
frustrated with Word's foibles as anyone else.

In this case, though, that's behavior I've never seen. When field codes are
toggled off, they stay that way until I toggle them on. On the other hand,
I've never used EndNote. Possibly the problem comes from EndNote, or from
the interaction between EndNote and Word. Have you looked at EndNote's
support site (http://www.endnote.com/support/ensupport.asp)?
