Codec inconsistencies

In Movie Maker I made a file xyz.WMV (7.8MB) which AVICodec reports as
using codecs
Video = Windows Media Video 9
Audio = Windows Media Audio 9

Using WMV Converter, I then converted that to xyz.AVI (5.3MB),
experimentally specifying these codecs:
Video = Intel Indeo(R) Video R3.2
Audio = Windows Media Audio V2

That played OK (video and audio) in WMP9, Nero ShowTime, and
RealPlayer.
Yet IrfanView played only the video, no sound.

And on trying to open the AVI in VirtualDub 1.6, I got:
"Error initializing audio stream decompression :
No installed audio codec could be found to decompress the compressed
source audio.
Check to make sure you have the required codec (Microsoft Audio
Codec)."

AVICodec confirmed that the specified codec were used, and that are
'supported'. IOW, I have both of them on my system (as must presumably
be necessary for those players to play the file OK).

So why does VirtualDub 1.6 apparently contradict that please?
And why can't IrfanView play the sound?
