code 39 on both of my dvd and cdwr

there no trace of them on "my computer" but it shows up
on device manager with code 39 and they don't work at all
please help me

Take a look at Alex Nichol's excelent article on how to restore the
'disappearing' CD drives.

Where is the article located ... this happened last week
on my Sony laptop ... it is gone ! But I can boot from a
Win98 startup disk and it is there in DOs

For a quick fix to this problem, perform the following:

There were values in the registry that are causing the problem. The problem
can be resolved by
going to the Regedit tool and going to the following folder:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4D36E965-E325-11C
E-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Once there, right-click on and delete the "UpperFilters" and "LowerFitlers"
values.

I hope this helps anyone else who has this problem with the mysterious
disappearing CD-RW drive.
