Might try checking the Upper & Lower filters for the optical drives..?

The easiest way to check without going into the registry, would be to go to
Device Manager, open DVD/CD-ROM
drives, right click one of your optical drives, select properties from the
menu,
Details tab, you should see "Device Instance Id" and a drop down arrow (v),
click it, move the mouse pointer down the list to highlight Device Upper
filters and click it, do the same for the Device Lower filters, Class Upper &
Lower filters as well to see and take note of their contents..
Also, there should be just 4 MS signed drivers in the Drivers tab, driver
details button, driver files details window, may want to check, your call..
(MS signed drivers: cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys, storprop.dll)
Do you see any other drivers installed or showing in the filters..?
Cheers

Device Upper & Lower filters is empty on both devices. nothing written

Class Upper & lower filters on one Cdralw2K GEARASpinWDM
the other Cdralw2K GEARaSplWDM
then they have both PXHelp20 drvmcdb sscdbhk5 cdr4_xp
Of course I am not at all computer knowledgable. The 4 drivers signed are
the ones you mentioned.
What does this mean???

Hi,

You can do a Google search for these drivers yourself, to investigate
further, if you need to..

http://www.file.net/process/cdralw2k.sys.html (*)
http://www.file.net/process/gearaspiwdm.sys.html (apple itunes ..?)
http://www.file.net/process/pxhelp20.sys.html (sonic..?)
http://www.file.net/process/drvmcdb.sys.html (sonic..?)
http://www.file.net/process/sscdbhk5.sys.html (sonic..?)
http://www.file.net/process/cdr4_xp.sys.html (*)
The above links indicate that you are using Roxio/Sonic software and perhaps
Itunes..
See the link below, applies to the drivers (*) marked..
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;q315345

http://kgiii.info/windows/XP/general...VD_drives.html
The above can help clear the upper & lower filters too..
You will need to reinstall your burning app and your (UDF packet writing
app) drag to disc app.. If you reinstall itunes their driver will be
reloaded, I don't use mine, so I didn't reinstall itunes, it works, just
won't rip CD's through the itune app, just use your Roxio apps..

Hope this can help..
Cheers

Frustrated,

I can only try to help point you in a direction I think relevant, it's your
computer not mine, and ultimately your decision to make..
You will have to do the thinking and work it out yourself, just investigate
the links and reason it out, try it or not, it's your call..
Cheers
