I just upgraded the OS on a long term NT4.0 Sp6a system to 2000 Pro and
have lost all my printing capability. I have a HP G85 on ECP 1.x and a
HP LaserJet 4050 on LPT2. The ports are unusable and attempts to reload
the port drivers results in the message "The name is already in use as
either a service name or a service display name." Any ideas? Does the
upgrade leave some old NT4 definitions?

Did you try this:

1- Uninstall all the printer software.
2- Unplug the printers from the ports.
3- Go in the hardware device manager and uninstall the ports.
4- Shutdown and reboot the pc.

When the pc reboots Windows Plug & Play should detect the ports as new
hardware and reinstall them properly but you may have to reboot more
than once for it to detect both ports. If Plug and Play does not detect
the ports you will have to use the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard in the
control panel to detect and reinstall the ports. Once the ports have
been detected and properly installed you should be able to plug your
printers (one at a time) and Plug and Play should detect the new
printers for installation or use the printer software to install them.
Make sure that you go to the printer manufacturer's web site and get the
proper software and drivers for Windows 2000.

As for the question "Does the upgrade leave some old NT4 definitions?"
well yes it does but usually they should be compatible. Upgrading an
Operating System always leaves some of the old baggage in place and
usually carries the old bugs and sometimes even amplifies them. That's
why most of the pro's will recommend that you do a clean install of any
OS instead of an upgrade, it usually makes for a better more stable
installation that is easier to maintain as you don't have the old stuff
cluttering the new.
