cmd.exe window hangs after Telnet timeout

My cmd window often hangs after a telnet session.
Specifically after the remote device has terminated the
connection, and only if I hit a key other than Enter.
If I do hit Enter I go back to the c:\> prompt and can
continue. If I hit any other key the c:\> prompt appears
but then hangs, and I cannot even close the window, only
minimize. All other programs run fine, but the PC will not
shut down from the Start menu. It has to be powered off by
the switch. Please advise. Thanks
