Mr. Daniels,
Here is a pearl for you. Don't show off. Impress.
The fact that the distance on a keyboard between CTRL and "w" is less than
the distance between CTRL and "F4" is obvious. It is immaterial but still
obvious. Was it really worth mentioning? Can't you see how offensive your
delivery is? You are always eager to point out your abilities as the
"sensitive reader," your skills at reading for content vice context, and
your ability to "intuit" was is meant by what is unsaid. Do you think that
you have a monopoly on those skills?
Your reputation for arrogance is legendary in this group. Your statement
screams your sense of superiority. "Here is my way and it is better than
yours because it is a shorter reach!"
Had you managed to bridle your arrogance you could have recommended your
preferred method by simply posting "Or press CTRL+w."
That statement provides helpful information, offer no biased opinion or
offense, and I feel certain that there are people who have and will adopt it
over CTRL+F4.
Everyone is not like you. You have your work style and preferences. I have
mine. Joe down the street has his. Your style may be keyboard centric
where your hands rarely leave the keyboard. For you CTRL+w may be both
natural and a shorter reach. Other people prefer using a mouse and their
right or left hand routinely moves between keyboard and mouse. For them the
physical distance between CTRL+w and CTRT+F4 is completely immaterial.
Reduced to being sophistic to show "you" the point, for the right hande
mouse user who uses two hands for keyboard shortcuts, the reach to "F4" is
about an inch closer than "w."
Despite what you might like to believe Mr. Daniels, people with work styles
and preferences unlike yours and who will sacrifice and span the chasm to
choose "F4" over "w" are not stupid or inefficient. They are just free
thinking people who choose to do something one way over another.
I think it is time to revise the order of your behavioral improvement goals.
It has become apparent that nothing is going to improve until you bridle
your arrogance:
1. Bridle your arrogance.
2. Post when and wherever you like, but stay in your range of expertise.
Always be open to the ideas and suggestion of others. If you venture outside
your range then try to be correct.
3. Stop posting your opinions as statements of fact. If you think something
is easy or if you prefer one method to another then say so in that manner.
Stop insisting or trying to prove that your ways are always best, easiest,
fastest, etc. Let others decided for themselves what is easiest between a
set of given options and decide for themselves if the effort/advantage of
pursuing one approach justifies taking that approach over another.
4. Stop disparaging the contributions and skills of others and selective
advanced Word features. Stop throwing up roadblocks and detours when a user
seeks information on a particular feature or function that you don't
understand or that you don't wish to pursue yourself.
