Can anyone explain what is going on here?

I have a document which I open and then immediately close and word then
asks if I want to save my changes.

I am using word 2002 (10.6866.6867) SP3 running on windows XP.
I have narrowed it down to a single line with these characters "West
Meon, 1HW." ended by new paragraph are enough to cause this. If I then
remove either the first or last character and {file > save as} with a
different name the resulting document can be opened and closed without
word thinking I have changed it.

This happens with both "Arial" and "Courier New" as the font and with
font sizes 10 and 12.

See "WD2002: You Are Prompted to Save Changes When You Close a Document Even

Many thanks, that did the trick. I wish a had been able to find it for
myself but even knowing what I was looking for I was unable to get this
article anywhere near the top of the results when searching in Microsoft
support.

Were you searching within MS (using Bing) or with Google? The latter is
usually superior. As it happens, this is a frequently asked question, and
the link is in my list of frequently referenced KB articles.

Thanks again. I was doing it inside MS support, googling is better. I
tried "ms word 2002 unchanged save prompt" which got me there in the
end but nor very directly. The only selection I found that went straight
there included your name!
