Closing ports to stealth mode

How do I close ports to the extend that they can be regarded as
"full stealth". In other words, how do I hide them: I don't want
them to respond to anything anymore. The only traffic I need is
for email and standard web browsing, nothing more (no home
networking or anything of such nature). Basically I would like to
lock my computer with the notable exception of what's needed to
email and browse the internet.

Thanks

Install a firewall such as Zonealarm

Indeed, BUT there is a "waterproof" solution that works
independent of firewalls by closing all the ports...

Hence no dependency on firewalls, just lock and hide all the
ports. If the firewall is switched off (which some of the users
of my pc do occasionally) than all the ports are open to all the
elements of the net which is worse then a backdoor of your house
open...

Have a read of :

If you are concerned that individuals are turning of the firewall for the
PC, use a hardware firewall such as Smoothwall setup on an old PC and direct
the PC's to connect to the internet through it. Or you can connect through
a router which has an inbuilt firewall.
