IE V6.0 will not close (recent problem): the only way to
close it is to use the task manager. It reports that the
application is not responding, and will then close it if
requested.

I get this behavior in the initial window. New windows
will close OK.

Any ideas what's causing this behaviour, and how to
overcome it?

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
