closed programs still running in task manager

I have noticed lately that after i have closed some programs that they are
still running according to the task manager. this has only been noticed last
month or so. i have two users set up .i noticed slow down and checked task
manager. under my girlfriends account there was say five instances of
winword.exe a few publishers running. not all programs seem to stay on but
can become significant ram killer. any body else seen this?
any suggestions?

The date and time was 5/27/2008 9:15 PM, and on a whim, bocmac pounded
out on the keyboard:

Hi Bob,

That is not normal. Programs should terminate when closed. How are
they being closed? Are they crashing at any time?

Any more my first suspect is Norton. Try disabling it completely and
see if the programs still remain in memory. Or try booting to Safe Mode
and see if you still have the same problem.

just closed as usual either through X or file . no crashes. no hint at any
thing bad till I noticed system slowdown. ive been looking for it since.
thought maybe office issue but unrelated prog. did it tonight
i am stuck in sp3 update at the moment . will see if it happens after if i
ever get out intact.

Closing a Word file does not close Word. You need to close Word.

That would probably be caused by some misbehaving third party add-in for
Office. Your gf clicks the X to close the program but the add-in "hangs"
and so the program doesn't actually finish closing, then she opens
another file and a new instance of the program is started, over and over
till she reboot and kills all the hung applications. So start checking
the add-in's in Office. Adobe acrobat can cause issues like this or
"Office-Add-in" virus scanners, are another bad problem.
