I want outlook to keep checking for new mail instead of comlpetely closing
when exit

Hi, When Outlook is running, right click on its tray icon and select
"Hide when Minimized".

Now just minimize Outlook and it will stil be running.

Check also under Outlook Tools / Options / Mail Setup / Send Receive
(Button) - check "Schedule an automatic send receive every...."
