close outlook but keep it running in background

how can i close outlook but keep the programme itself running in the
background so i can still recieve mail. As if i close outlook I will not
recieve my mail until i have re-opened outlook.

please can you help.

Version? Outlook 2003 and 2007 can minimize to the tray area - that the
best you can do to run it in the background.
