I am running two profiles on my outlook, when I go to close a session outlook
closes but remains running on the Sys tray, so when I try to open a new
session with another profile it goes directly into the previous profile
opened and does not prompt for a profile. Clearly the session has remained
open... any ideas why this has started to occur?

One common reason is an Outlook Add-ins failing to shut down. You could
give Outlook Shutdown add-in a try:

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Covey Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing mail.
7. Skype - update to the latest version

http://sunflowerhead.com/software/knockout/ is free - written by Jensen Harris of the Ribbon GUI fame. Adds some extra value besides shutting down Outlook as well.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact.

After furious head scratching, Outlook does not close asked:
