Word 2003 had 2 "X" buttons in the upper right hand corner. One closed the
open document and one closed the program.

Word 2007 only has 1 "X" button. Everytime I only want to close the
document the whole program closes and I have to reopen it to continue.

Solution?

Ctrl-W (or: Office button > Close).

Note that most Word 2007 users add the Close button to the QAT (usually one
of the first to be added).
