Usually close my Outlook 2002 by going to "File", "close all items" and
"exit". Continue to get error message upon restart or reopen: Outlook Today
data file was not closed properly. And then it has to check it for problems.
This happens everytime. What am I doing wrong to close Outlook?

I am also having this problem. No matter how I close Outlook, when I reopen,
it goes to safe mode. I tried un-installing it, restarting the computer,
then re-installing it. The error still occurs.

I am also having the problem for the last few months. I suspect that it is
also the reason why when I attempt to shutdown, the system hangs and never
power off automatically.
What is the solution?
