Close background programs before install new programs

With Win XP, I wish to install a graphics program. The
instructions say to "disable all background programs and
utilities" before installing new software programs. Using
Control/Alt/Delete, I see one tab indicating open programs
I am currently using. The next tab's list includes my
antivirus program. How many items in the 2nd tab do I
shut down besides the antivirus program? Eeeek!

Hi Vicki,

As long as you disable antivirus processes and close running programs, you
should be fine. Do not fret about the system processes too much. Most will
not interfere with an installation.

Got a similar question. I'm using B's Recorder Gold to burn CD's. It
advises to close ALL other programs, disable screen saver, et al, to
prevent ANY interference with burning. No problem in W98, but in XP I
don't know which programs are safe to kill. I tried a few and managed
to bring my system down.

Vicki, sorry to ride on your coattails, but we have similar concerns.

Thanks to all for your help.

Lakeside
