Is there a way to make a complete disk image of an xp-system on an external
USB-disk drive, which can be restored on another xp-computer? This is meant
to serve as an ultimate safety precaution which works still in case of
complete loss of the primary computer
Standard disk imaging tools like Powerquest Drive Image will not work,
because of overwriting the existing xp system during restore with the saved
image, which will not work on anther hardware because of XP activation.
Thanks for your help

Several answers:
- My version of Drive Image lets me make a recovery disk
that I can use to restore a whole disk partition.
- You could also create/restore a complete image with a
Bart PE boot CD (www.bootdisk.com).
- You cannot run a restored image on another PC, unless
the hardware is identical. It it is not then Windows will
probably crash, regardless of any XP activation issues.

Yes, xp computers can definitely get cloned on multiple computers using an
imaging tool plus a microsoft supplied tool sysprep. Of course, he receiving
computers must run an legal copy of xp. see:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;302577
My problem is, that above mentionned procedure requires an OPERATIONAL
reference computer. I am looking for a procedure which can be run off a
backup disk, because in my scenario the reference computer is supposed to be
completely destroyed.
