Client Domain issue

Over the weekend i tried to upgrade my NT4 domain to 2003, i had a couple of
issues thought.

My xp and 2k/2k3 servers clients did not automatically change their domain
name from "company" to "company.ad" and hence did not register A records in
DNS. If i manually changed the domain name to "company.ad" and did a Ipconfig
/registerdns the records were added to the dns server.
Due to the fact that i would have had to go around all of my 500 clients to
change this i had to abandon the upgrade and go back the drawing board.

To my surprise I came in this morning to find that all of my 2k and 2k3
servers had changed there domain name from "Company" to "company.ad"??? Is
there a time delay for this to change their domain name if there is can i
force this???

Can anyone help me with this as it has me stumped!!
